In 2003, thanks to a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation—Distress Centre Durham was able to develop and deliver an interactive Suicide Awareness Presentation to local Durham Region secondary schools. The following testimonials are based on the comments received on the presentation Evaluation form, and are printed with permission.
Student responses include:
“I learned that people can show the slightest symptoms and still be thinking about suicide.”
“Having lost a best friend to suicide I was very happy to see that there are more people who feel the way I do.”’
“I learned that suicide is something very important and we never talk about it.”
“I think this presentation would be helpful for other students in our school.”
Teacher responses include:
“This was my first time seeing the presentation so I was unsure what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised! It was a well—organized presentation with great interaction and use of visual aids. I am pleased to have the experts to touch on this very important topic with our students. This presentation fits in very well with the Adolescence section of our course and I hope to incorporate this presentation into our unit again!”
J. Clarke Richardson Collegiate
“We need to get this information out to students on a more regular basis, especially in today’s society. I think there are far more stressors that affect adolescents from when I was a teenager!”
