What to Say & DO

DO:

¨ LISTEN - this is the most IMPORTANT thing you can do

¨ Be open, non judgmental and understanding

¨ Let them know that there is help available and that you are there for them

¨ Realize that you cannot be the only source of support to someone who is feeling suicidal, you must engage qualified professionals to offer their help as well

¨ Admit your own fear and concern for them

¨ Remember suicidal thoughts and behaviours ALWAYS reflect a deeper issue (s) and this must always be taken seriously

SAY:

¨ Do you want to end your life?

¨ Are you thinking about killing yourself?

¨ How long have you been feeling this way?

¨ You are not alone and there is help!

¨ What has been happening in your life to make you feel this way?

If they answer Yes to wanting to end their life, ask them:

¨ How and where do you intend on killing yourself?

¨ Do you have the means to do it (i.e. weapon, drugs, etc)?

¨ IF they say YES make sure to get professional help and do NOT leave them alone

What NOT to say:

¨ “It’s not that bad”

¨ “Well my life is…”

¨ “You shouldn't be having these thoughts”

ACCESS SUPPORTS

¨ Get help from a trusted adult even if your friend asks you not too, you cannot do this alone!

¨ Ask the person about his/her supports: who can they trust, who can they turn to when they feel like this? Who has been helpful in the past?

¨ Family, friends, neighbors, counselor, teacher, family doctor, help lines etc.

¨ Don’t Assume that all of these people are supports, in fact they may be a part of the problem

¨ See Crisis Numbers List on “CRISIS” page

You Need Support too!

¨ REMEMBER, You cannot take on the responsibility for someone else's life

¨ You cannot be an entire source of support for this person, but you can be a part of their support network

¨ You need to get help too, in order to talk about your feelings of guilt, worry, anger and concern

¨ It is ok to break someone's confidence in order to SAVE A LIFE!
