MYTH!

One does not activate a suicide plan because they are asked about feeling suicidal, saying the word “suicide” sends the message that it is okay to talk about those feelings.

People who talk about killing themselves rarely do

 

MYTH!

8 out of 10 people who kill themselves give clues that they were contemplating suicide up to months before.

 

 

The suicidal person is most often unsure about their desire to die

 

FACT!

The Suicidal person most likely wants to end the pain and despair not to die

 

 

Only people who appear depressed want      to kill themselves

 

MYTH!

A person who is suicidal may or may not appear depressed, many people hide their true feelings and may not seem depressed.

 

 

There is a high correlation between substance abuse and suicide

 

FACT!

Alcohol and / or drugs are involved in approx. 85% of all suicides, however they are not necessarily a direct cause.  Often suicide attempts FOLLOW the ingestion of drugs and / or alcohol.

 

 

Suicide happens without warning

 

MYTH!

These cues can be subtle or obvious, the suicidal person has probably conveyed suicidal thoughts or intent to at least 1 other person prior to activating a plan.

 

 

 

 

Being mentally ill increases the risk of suicide

 

FACT!

People with depression, schizophrenia or bipolar disorder are at higher risk for suicidal behavior for many reasons

 

 

A Suicide Survivor is at higher              risk for suicide

 

FACT!

The loss of a loved one to suicide creates a very complex type of grief, and without adequate support a suicide “survivor” may  see suicide as a way to cope with the devastation.  If suicide is the result of an undiagnosed or untreated mental illness, the genetic factor may put a related survivor at a greater risk.
