3rd Annual 5 KM Walk for SUICIDE AWARENESS

It was a day of hope, of remembrance and of inspiration as 60+ participants joined Distress Centre Durham on a beautiful sunny day Saturday September 8, 2007 to raise awareness about suicide and its impact.

In recognition of World Suicide Prevention Day September 10, 2007, Distress Centre Durham held its 3rd Annual 5Km Walk for Suicide Awareness at Heydenshore Park along the Whitby Waterfront Trail.

Approx 60 participants raised pledges and walked in recognition of someone they lost to suicide and to help raise awareness about the impact of suicide on families and communities!

Together we walked, enjoyed our BBQ lunch and released balloons in unison with messages of love.  Thanks to their support, we raised close to $8000.00 for our Suicide and Crisis Support Programs.  We are looking forward to our 4th Annual Walk next year!

Dinner & Theatre Night - "You Can't Dance to Mozart"

You Can’t Dance to Mozart” but you can enjoy a wonderful comedy and eat a fabulous dinner at Class Act Dinner Theatre!

On August 16th, 2007 Distress Centre Durham held a fundraiser at Class Act Dinner Theatre and raised in excess of $1100.00 for its programs and services!   Class Act Owners, Rocky and Claudie Varcoe provided all those in attendance with a wonderful evening of entertainment.

Local playwright John F. Green wrote and directed the comedy “You Can’t Dance to Mozart” about Barney and Kate, neighbours in a run down apartment building who find love and a real estate scheme designed to bring their unethical landlord to his knees.

Those in attendance had a fantastic time and laughed from start to finish!  Thanks again to all those who purchased tickets in support of Distress Centre Durham and to the staff and performers of Class Act Dinner Theatre for giving us a night we won’t soon forget!

 2nd Annual Martini & Manicure

Distress Centre Durham held its second annual Martini & Manicure event at Class Act Dinner Theatre in Whitby on May 15th, 2007 and it was a wonderful evening for the ladies. The 150 ladies that attended received a free gift at the door from MAC and enjoyed a manicure from our volunteer estheticians, a martini and appetizers throughout the evening.  The surprise of the evening was a free massage for some of the ladies from our volunteer massage therapists, a fashion show put on by Nellie's Fashions and if the ladies wished, they could shop at the booth "I want that" for purses, sun glasses, jewelry etc. - Thank you to "I want that" for your wonderful donation of 10% of all purchases.

We also had a 50/50 draw and a silent auction for a limo ride (courtesy of Northhumberland Limo) and a Keg gift Certificate of $100.00 plus a camera.  The night was a success and the ladies had fun.  Distress Centre Durham wishes to express our thanks and appreciation to the Volunteer Estheticians, Massage Therapists and their wonderful patience and hard work.  We also would like to thank the Volunteers that came out to help with the event.

The unexpected surprise of the evening occurred when the Lions Club of Whitby (having their monthly meeting at Class Act) presented the Distress Centre Durham with a generous $500.00 dollar donation.  Distress Centre Durham gained further awareness in the community and raised just over $3,500.00 dollars.  Thank you to all!

2007 Suicide Conference - Suicide and Vulnerable Populations

On February 8, 2007 the Distress Centre Durham brought together professionals and survivors to better understand the awareness of suicide in vulnerable populations.  Cindy Wesley the keynote address explored the issues of grief and advocacy as she shared her story about her daughter Dawn Marie who died by suicide.  In the later part of the day Christine Cieslar shared her grief journey that evolved into a search for answers in understanding the loss of her husband to suicide.  We thank everyone who attended and participated in our 3rd annual conference.  A big thanks to the wonderful volunteers that gave of their time that helped make the day so successful.  What a wonderful educational learning experience.
